IBA Pipeline Pro North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

Tuesday, February 22nd (Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii): Jeff Hubbard, 35, Hawaii, has won the first event of the 2011 International Bodyboard Association World Tour, the IBA Pipeline Pro, which culminated today in one-to-two metre waves at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii.
It was the third win at the break for Hubbard, who today earned 2000 valuable GSS ratings points, US$6000 and the all-important lead in the race for the 2011 IBA World Title.
Hubbard previously claimed the event in 2006 and 2002 and is considered a Pipe specialist and one of the greatest aerialists in the game. His win today was an incredible come-from-behind effort that saw him snatch the title in the dying moments from a host of hungry rookies - Tom Rigby (Gold Coast, AUS), 2011 IBA World Tour Rookie of the Year, Jared Houston (Capetown, ZAF) and Dallas Singer (Newcastle, NSW, AUS).
With seven minutes remaining in the 35-minute decider, Hubbard’s chances looked dashed. In fourth place and requiring two waves to have a hope of winning, it looked like debutant and upstart, Rigby, would have his first-ever taste of victory.
Then Hubbard did the unthinkable, pulling a near-perfect 9.75 ride out of a possible 10, for a huge ARS (air, reverse spin) followed by two rolls, to push himself into third place and contention.
Two minutes later, Hubbard was again up and riding, pulling into a deep Backdoor cave before launching to the heavens, to pull the ultimate Houdini act, earning a 9.5 from the judges and victory.
“I felt like I was surfing form behind all day … I finally got in a rhythm in the finals at the very last minute. But I was in combo-land for 17 minutes. I thought to myself, ‘what’s happened?’. I just felt totally out of rhythm again. I thought I have to dig deep, it’s my local spot, it’s the final – no one was giving an inch. So I just tried harder and it all fell together,” said Hubbard.
“It’s probably the most exciting final I’ve ever had out here. I’m over the moon! To come from so far behind and then take first place, I’m really feeling it right now … wow!”
Rookie Rigby was on the verge of history, the 18 year-old putting in a career changing performance on the final day, consistently hitting big backflips over the shallow Backdoor reef to the delight of the strong Aussie contingent who cheered him from shore.
Rigby earned his spot via his local Australian qualifying series and surfed his way through nine rounds qualify for his first ever Grand Slam final.
“I’m living in a dream world right now. I really had no expectations of making the final. To beat Hardy (Ryan Hardy, WA, AUS) in the quarters, he has always been a hero of mine, was awesome. And Amaury, the world champ ... it’s been an amazing day. Congratulations to Hubb (Jeff Hubbard), I’m just stoked to be able to surf a final against all these guys, It’s pretty surreal.” said Rigby.
Jared Houston (ZAF) finished third at Pipeline last year during his debut appearance at elite level and matched that effort again today.
“So stoked to make another final. It’s only my third event here at Pipeline so it feels good to make back-to-back finals. It’s good to compete against these guys. Rigby, he’s come so far in the last year, and to compete against Jeff, he’s one of my idols – it’s fun to a part of it,” said Houston.
Fourth place went to Australian Dallas Singer.
Finishing in equal fifth place today were Mark McCarthy (Capetown, ZAF) of South Africa and Pierre Louis Costes (FRA).
Pierre Louis Costes (FRA), 21, scored the event’s first and only perfect 10-point ride on route to a semis berth, for a big, blue Backdoor tube that he followed up with a text-book roll and backflip.
“I wasn’t expecting a 10 point ride, I wasn’t sure what my score was going to be, but the judges gave Mike’s first wave an 8.5 and mine was better so … I’m pretty stoked to get a perfect score at Pipe and it’s only my second 10-point ride ever on the IBA World Tour. It’s an addictive feeling, I hope I get more.” said Costes.
Defending IBA Pipeline Pro event champion and reigning IBA World Tour champion, Amaury Lavernhe, suffered an upset elimination at the quarterfinal stage. On a day where the rookie upstarts prevailed, Lavernhe was forced to settle for equal13th after placing fourth in his quarter behind Australian Ryan Hardy (WA, AUS), rampaging Rigby and the South African, McCarthy.
I was a bit disappointed in my heat. I didn’t have good waves in the beginning. Technically I still have a lot to learn in these kind of conditions. I had my money on Jared I’m really stoked for Jared, in fact I put my money on Jared for the final because I like him as a guy and I like his riding. But Tom Rigby is good too. He’s just 18 and won the Pipe final. I mean, ‘wow’! Both those guys inspire me technically,” said Lavernhe.
Early event standout, Brian Wise saw his run ended this morning by Rawlins and Magno Oliveira (BRA). Having returned to competition at Pipeline after a three-year competitive hiatus, Wise emerged as a sentimental favourite with fans having progressed through five rounds.
South African, Sacha Specker (Capetown, ZAF) was another early stand-out, the 27 year-old constantly scoring in the excellent range and boasting the highest two-wave combined heat score heading into the final day. But drawn against three of the tour’s most daunting names - Valadao, Tamega and Rawlins - Specker saw his flawless momentum reach an end in Round 7.
“I couldn’t get into rhythm at all. I couldn’t pick off a good one. Tamega and Uri were on fire – they had such a cracker heat, the both of them. There wasn’t a whole lot more I could do,” reflected Specker.
All the action from the final day was broadcast live to Australian viewers via FUEL TV while iPhone users enjoyed the finals action, free, via the Red Bull TV iPhone App.
The next event on the IBA World Tour is scheduled for April 14-20 at The Box, a notorious shallow, right hand reef break situated near Margaret River, West Australia.
The Box event will also be the first to feature the new three-round non-elimination format that will be utilized at each remaining location on the 2011 GSS tour.

Friday, February 18th (Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii): Pipeline’s notorious Backdoor has revealed glimpses of its tubular best with some high-scoring barrel rides going down on Day 2 of the opening 2011 IBA World Tour event in Hawaii.
The day’s best wave belonged to visiting Aussie rider, Tom Rigby (AUS), who was awarded a near perfect 9.9 out of a possible perfect 10 for a long disappearing act in Round 4.
The score saw Rigby advance easily into Round 5 along with French rider Julien Miremont (FRA) and caused the elimination of local Hawaiians Will Petrovic (Haw) and Trevor Kam (Haw).
Tim Hamilton (Kauai, Haw) was another big-scorer, locking in a 9.0 ride to cause the shock elimination of two Pipeline Pro standouts, Andrew Lester(AUS) and Chris Won (Haw).
Lester, who won the event aged 20 in 2000, and Won, a regular in the local line-up, were bundled out unceremoniously in equal 65th and equal 73rd respectively.
Comeback King, Brian Wise (Haw), continued on his rampage, registering an
8.5 high ride for a nice Backdoor drain-pipe which saw him advance into Round 5 behind local Keahi Parker (Haw).
Wise has not competed in three years and in that time suffered back, neck and femur injuries in a serious car accident. A new outlook, a fiancé and determination to succeed have reversed his fortunes and his success through four rounds has firmed him as a sentimental favourite heading into the last day.
“It’s about perseverance and staying alive and getting through this contest, I got stuck in a couple, I made one … I got a nice long ride, it opened up and it just barrelled the whole way. I’ve had a couple close ones, but I’m hanging in there, and keeping the dream alive and just doing what needs to be done. Every heat is a step closer,” said Wise.
Australian, Mitch Rawlins (Gold Coast, AUS), revered as the most exciting young performer on the world stage, made his first appearance in the IBA Pipeline Pro in Round 5 and wasted no time in going for the big moves.
The 27 year-old blasted into a looping reverse and stuck some critical rolls over the shallow reef to secure his place in Round 6 behind early standout Sacha Specker (ZAF) of South Africa.
“It was my first heat in a while and the first heat of the year so it was pretty nerve wracking, but it was good to shake off the cobwebs. Being in a heat intensifies everything, I haven’t been in a contest in a few months now, you’d think it’s only 20 minutes so you say to yourself ‘I’ll just cruise through it’, but it’s a real work out. To get through a heat at any time is satisfying. Now I’m on into the next round, so looking forward to that,” said Rawlins.
Pipe specialist and former runner-up, Spencer Skipper (Haw) was another to hit the water today. Skipper advanced to the last day behind Julien Miremont (FRA) of France.
The Women’s Division was completed in deteriorating conditions, but it did not dampen the determination of a tough field. Brazilian duo, six-time champion Steph Pettersen (rep. AUS) entered the final as firm favourite alongside former champ, Neymara Carvalho (BRA).
The deciding moment occurred midway through the final when Pettersen eyed-up a Backdoor right hander, decided not to go and Carvalho pounced – the score was one of the highest in the clash.
Friends chaired Carvalho from the water’s edge before she was presented with her second, first-place IBA Pipeline trophy.
All the action from the final day of the IBA Pipeline Pro will be available for viewing via the LIVE webcast at www.ibaworldtour.com. It is the most ambitious ever undertaken by the IBA with multi-camera angles and replays.
Hawaiian fans can see the action via Oceanic Cable channel 16 (OC 16,

Thursday, February 17th (Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii): Professional bodyboarding has returned to Hawaii’s North Shore with the commencement of Event 1 on the 2011 IBA World Tour, the IBA Pipeline Pro that kicked off in clean two-metres waves today.
The revamped tour, which sees eight major global Grand Slam Series events in exciting and dangerous locations, has drawn out the who’s who of big name stars and budding pros.
Among the standout performers on Day 1 was USA transplant, Brian Wise (USA), a formidable 90s performer who blasted his way through three rounds of competition in his first contest in three years.
Wise spun and rolled his way through a marathon day that included a pre-event warm-up session when he practised without fins or leash. The former finalist (1996) was clearly stoked to be back in the competitive arena, and registered the day’s highest individual wave score, an 8.75 out of a possible perfect 10, on route to Round 4.
“The waves are really contestable. We have good ramps and really nice, long drawn out waves and I think we’ll get better waves right through out this contest,” said Wise.
“I’ve been back on the North Shore since October and I’ve had so many Pipe days, concentrating on my riding, working to improve my style and my manoeuvres,” he added.
Nostalgia was blended with first-time experience of Australian brothers, Charles and Harley Ward. The pair, who regularly tackle the cold, life-threatening waves of their local break Shipstern Bluff, unknowingly created history when they became the first Tasmanian riders to compete at the elite level.
Having successfully won their way through the trials held at Sandy Beach on Oahu’s South side on Sunday, the brothers progressed through to Rounds two and three respectively in the main event, before being eliminated. Many other riders remain in the draw to represent their national ‘green n’ gold’ colours, but none can claim to be from the infamous “Apple Isle”.
“We came here to get good surf and try our best in the competition. I think everyone at home is pretty stoked we made it into the main event. We tried last year, but didn’t get in. Now this is the first event we’ve qualified for,” said Charles.
“Tassie has variety of waves, but obviously the water’s a lot warmer here, it’s so bloody cold at home! It’s not crowded at all at home, but crowded here, so there are same major differences. And the overall level of riding is higher in Hawaii. In fact, the level is higher than just about anywhere else we’ve ever travelled,” he said.
The day’s highest two-wave combined heat score belonged to South African campaigner, Sacha Specker (ZAF) who within five minutes of his 20-minute encounter, had secured an 8.25 and 7.5 to be sitting comfortably in front on a combined total of 15.75 out of a possible 20.
Speckers opponents, Alvaro Jurado (ESP), Kalani Lattanzi (BRA) and Keahi Parker (Haw) were left to scrap for the minor placing, with Parker getting the nod and advancing behind Specker in second position.
“I was lucky those waves came straight to me at the start of the heat. From there I didn’t need to chase any more scores. I actually played it really safe. I picked the biggest waves and just did what the judges wanted to see - clean, big moves,” explained Specker.
Fellow South African, former two-time Pipeline Pro winner, Andre Botha (ZAF), was a surprise elimination, bowing out in Round 3 in equal 49th place. Botha became the youngest-ever champion of the event when he first stormed the victory dais aged 17 in 1998.
Today the South African looked sharp in his Round 2 debut, advancing easily in first place ahead of Hawaiian Alex Brown (Haw), Portugal’s Joao Neiva (PRT) and Mark Klein (USA) of the United States.
His fortunes were reversed this afternoon, however, the 28 year-old going down in less than spectacular fashion, ending his heat in a disappointing last place to Jacob Pembrook (Haw), Bud Miyamoto (Haw) and Elliot Morales (CNY).
Former two-time runner-up, Babby Quino was also a surprise loss. The Puerto Rican with a reputation for his big-wave prowess has battled recurring injury and looked to be in good form before bowing out in third place to Aussie duo Josh Garner (AUS) and Alex Halsey (AUS) in Round 2.
Competition is expected to resume in similar conditions tomorrow, Friday Feb 18th. Organisers will make a call on proceedings at 07:00 local time for a possible 08:00 start.
